The results of a government-funded study show that very high doses of an avian influenza vaccine, supplied by Sanofi-Aventis, are needed to produce an immune response that should guard against the virus. 54% of the volunteers received two shots of 90 micrograms each, 28 days apart. A typical flu shot is 15 micrograms.

Based on the requirements seen in the study, the U.S. government’s current stockpile of vaccines would provide enough for only about four million people, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases.

The problem isn’t just a matter of dosage. It is also a matter of production. Flu vaccines are produced using hen’s eggs,a 50-year old technology, if it can be called that. Automated machines inject hundreds of thousands of eggs, then an 11-day waiting period begins while the eggs incubate, brewing viruses that are then killed and bottled. To produce millions of the the final product takes about six months.

Then there’s the question no one seems to be asking: if we plan to rely upon chicken eggs to incubate an H5N1 virus, how do we know the H5N1 virus won’t kill the eggs? H5N1 already kills chickens. Shouldn’t we assume it also kills a high percentage of chicken eggs? Sanofi-Aventis is spending $150 million of its own money building a new vaccine-making plant based on the theory that H5N1 won’t kill the eggs. By the way, eggs have to be ordered many months in advance for this antiquated process.

And where does Sanofi-Aventis plan to get all these egg-laying chickens anyway? Millions of chickens have been slaughtered worldwide already and a pre-pandemic scenario could kill off whole U.S. chicken farms at once.

However, there is a new vaccine technology on the horizon. It’s called cell-based vaccine. Giant vats of living cells, such as dog kidney cells, multiply and then are inoculated with the virus. There are two companies already in the marketplace, one in Holland, one in Germany, but the technology won’t be widely available for years. The FDA must review the entire method before any equipment can be imported to the U.S.

Clearly, the U.S. has waited for a new virus to come along to spur vaccine research. We may have waited too long. H5N1 isn’t waiting. It’s figuring out how to mutate into human-to-human transmission. In fact, the rate of mutation is alarming. Dr. Robert Webster, Ph.D., Member, St. Jude Faculty Rose Marie Thomas Chair, calls H5N1 “the most frightening virus I’ve ever seen in 40 years of research.”

If you and your family are counting on a vaccine to protect you against H5N1 (Avian Influenza), don’t bet on it. There are still too many unanswered questions and too many risks.

Many people get headaches as a response to physical strain, cramped muscles, and pinches nerves. These muscular headaches can be brutal, and are usually reoccurring to a very persistent degree. Usually, there is some level of tightness in or soreness in the area the muscle strain is occurring, like your neck or back area.

Because your nerves in that region are all connected and ultimately lead to your head, strain in your neck, shoulders, or back can produce headaches. Usually these kinds of headaches start out very localized, but can often spread over your entire head. Cures for headaches of this kind are difficult, as you have to cease doing whatever it is that is causing the strain, and may need extensive physical therapy to help your muscles recover.

Then there are sinus headaches. These are especially nasty, but fortunately are rarely a constant reoccurring phenomenon. Sinus headaches result from pressure in your sinuses, as a result from allergies, colds, or a sinus infection. If you get sinus headaches a lot, you may be suffering from allergies. Cures for headaches of this type can range from allergy treatments, to decongestants. My favorite is Claritin.

Unfortunately, headaches are one of the most complicated and poorly understood phenomenons in the medical world. Have you ever tried asking your doctor about cures for headaches? If you ask ten different doctors about headaches, you’ll get ten different answers.

The reason why doctors give you so many different answers is because headaches can have so many causes, and a lot of them aren’t really clear. If you get a lot of headaches, the first step you should do is try and figure out what kind of headaches you’re getting. From my understanding, there are a few different kinds.

Last but certainly not least, are migraines; everyone’s favorite and the least understood of the headache family. There are so many potential causes for migraines its not funny. If you suffer from migraines often, like me, it’s a good start to keep a kind of headache log.

Record hours you slept, how well you slept, what you ate and drank, what you did during the day, anything you can think of and see if you can detect patterns with your headaches. If you can’t get your finger on it there’s always painkillers. While they’re certainly not cures for headaches, they are better than nothing.

If you suffer from frequent headaches like me, finding some effective cures for headaches has probably been a personal goal of yours. I know for me it has been like the search for the Holy Grail. I would gladly sell my soul for some kind of magic pill of treatment that would serve as a once and for all cure for headaches.

Sufferers around the globe will be happy to hear that there are sleep apnea remedies that will enable you to regain control over your life. And, it is thanks to these sleep apnea remedies that you will never have to lose another night’s sleep.

One of the first sleep apnea remedies to try would include simple steps that you can take, on your own, to help treat the disorder. If you sleep on your back regularly, stop now. Try sleeping on your side instead. This may help to prevent your airways from being blocked, which is what tends to happen when apnea sufferers sleep on their back. If you suffer from allergies, rid your home of any/all allergens, including pet hair, cigarette smoke and dust. Regular cleaning and the use of air filtration units in each room will go a long way in helping you to breathe cleaner air.

Obesity is a major concern that often leads to sleep apnea. Therefore, one of the best sleep apnea remedies is to simply begin a healthy, well-balanced program consisting of diet and exercise. If you are overweight, or have recently been diagnosed with obesity, losing weight will help to curb sleep apnea as well as possibly prevent other health problems in the future. While you are altering your lifestyle, it is time to give up alcohol and cigarettes if either of these are present because both may lead to sleep apnea.

After all natural sleep apnea remedies have been exhausted, a physician may recommend the use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. This machine provides the apnea sufferer with a continual amount of pressurized air, which will prevent the muscles and tissue in the throat from collapsing during sleep. With sleep apnea, the sufferer actually stops breathing through the night due to this collapse, which is why the use of this machine is often a very vital treatment among the sleep apnea remedies.

The Sleep Genie, which is a doctor approved anti-snoring device, comfortably supports the jaw while helping to keep the mouth closed during sleep. While not intended to cure sleep apnea, the Sleep Genie often helps users to have a better quality sleep. Users of the CPAP machine need to sleep with their mouth closed in order to prevent the benefits of the machine from escaping through the night. Some users of the CPAP machine have found a good companion in the Sleep Genie, which will secure their closed mouth during the night.

In the human wrist there is a sheath of tough connective tissue which surrounds and protects the median nerve and tendons that attach muscles to the wrist and hand bones. The Carpal Tunnel is the space above ane below this sheath and the bones making up the carpal bones in the wrist and hand.

The term ‘Carpal Tunnel’ is also used quite commonly to refer to ‘Carpal Tunnel Syndrome’ which is a condition where the median nerve is pinched within the tunnel and causes pain and/or numbness of the wrist/hand, once thought to be a result of repetitive motion such as painting or typing.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition more common in women than it is in men, and has a peak incidence around age 50 though it can occur in any adult.

What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel?

The first symptoms of Carpal Tunnel usually appear when trying to sleep. Symptoms range from a burning, tingling numbness in the fingers, especially of the thumb and index and middle fingers to difficulty gripping and making a fist. Inability to firmly grasp and dropping things can become an issue. If left untreated the symptoms can progress, and increasing pain intensity can further restrict hand functionality.

In the early stages of Carpal Tunnel, individuals often mistakenly blame the tingling numbness on their sleeping position, thinking their hands have had restricted circulation and are simply falling asleep.

It is important to note that unless numbness is one of the predominant symptoms, it is unlikely the symptoms are primarily caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In effect, pain of any type, location, or severity with the absence of significant numbness, is not likely to fall under this diagnosis.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is known as a “hidden disability” because people can do some things with their hands and appear to have normal hand function. However, despite these appearances, those afflicted often live with severely restricted hand activity due to the pain.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel? The jury is still out on this one. Most cases of Carpal Tunnel are idiopathic. Many people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome have gradual increasing symptoms over time. A common factor in developing Carpal Tunnel symptoms is increased hand use or activity.

In summary, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can easily be aggravated by activity. People that develop symptoms will frequently blame this on their work exposure, even though this exposure may indeed have little to do with the root cause of their Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The vibratory noise that originates in the throat when there is blockage in the airway is called snoring. It is an involuntary act, which is found in both males and females. If you are a heavy snorer and you want to stop snoring then there are a number of treatments you can try.

If you think that snoring is harmless you are wrong. Snoring can have adverse effects on your health and therefore you should address ways to stop snoring.

The main reason why you should make an effort to stop snoring is because it has negative consequences in terms of social as well as physical conditions. There are many people who have been put into embarrassing situations because of their snoring habits. If you want to stop snoring you must follow certain measures. If you are overweight then following a weight reduction program should be the first place you start, as carrying excessive weight around your neck will impact on your airways. Try blowing your nose before you go to sleep in case your snoring is related to blocked nasal passages. Reduce alcohol intake especially in the evening and if you’re a smoker it’s time to give up. These actions are the basic steps that you can take yourself to address your snoring.

But if these natural remedies don’t help you stop snoring, there are other options. You can opt for surgery, which might include a throat operation to remove the soft palate and make the walls of the throat tighter. It is worth noting that the surgery is painful and immediately after the surgery you will find it difficult to swallow. Other surgical options are laser scarring and somnoplasty.

Somnoplasty is a surgery using low power radio frequency to remove the soft palate region. Local anesthesia is required for the surgery, and it takes about thirty minutes. Somnoplasty is the most effective way to stop snoring when you snore often but suffer from a breathing disorder.

CPAP is a breathing device, which you can use to stop snoring. It is perhaps the most conventional method of reducing snoring. CPAP consist of a mask that is fitted over the nose and mouth and is held in place with straps. The mask is connected to a blower that produces air pressure. You wear this mask when you go to sleep as it keeps your airways open.

Medications can also help you stop snoring. Your doctor may prescribe certain medications that help you reduce and eventually get rid of your mild snoring habits forever. If you want to stop snoring there are many options so don’t lose hope. It might take a little time but once you find the correct form of treatment and adopt the appropriate remedial measures you can finally stop snoring. Consult your doctor for stop snoring options that are suitable for you.

Insomnia is defined as difficulty in sleeping, or disturbed sleep patterns leaving the perception of insufficient sleep. There are many herbs with reputations as being effective sleep remedies. The key to successful treatment of insomnia is to find the cause. If you do not want to take prescription sleep medication, then there are a plethora of holistic medicines available to you.

Often the key to successful treatments lies in the focusing upon some part or function of the body that is experiencing problems. Hypnotics and nerviness can be used within the context of such treatments. These can be selected based on the role they play upon the system in question. The following are, a list of systems and possible remedies.

1. The circulatory system responds well to Motherwort, Lime Blossom and Balm.

2. The respiratory system responds well to all types of hypnotics, if used in the right dosage.

3. The digestive system relaxants to use are Chamomile, Vervain, Balm, Hops and Valerian.

4. Hypnotics are important to use as a muscle relaxant for the urinary system. Pasque Flower and Black Cohosh have a high success rate on the reproductive system. Jamaican Dogwood, Valerian and Black Cohosh are excellent ingredients to relax the muscles and skeletal systems.

5. Chamomile and Cowslip are healing herbs for the skin.

Some of the medications are classified in the following way:

Hypnotics are herbs with a reputation as easing the person into sleep. They are usually strong nervine relaxants. Nervine relaxants ease the tensions that often produce sleeplessness.

Anti-spasmodics address any somatic muscular tightness that may be involved. Nervine tonics are indicated if there is any suspicion that the insomnia is associated with nervous exhaustion.

Adaptogens will help in a similar way to the nerve tonics, but should only be used in the morning to help deal with stress.

The value of hypnotics is to ensure that the body has a good recuperative rest each night. By selecting herbs that address specific health needs that are compounding the sleep difficulties, better results are obtained than simply going for strong hypnotic.

An example of an herbal prescription for insomnia would be the following:

Insomnia associated with hypertension and headaches:

* Passion Flower
* Valerian
* Linden
* Cramp Bark

7.5ml of tincture 30 minutes before bedtime.

There are many herbal remedies suggested for curing insomnia. You may have to try a few before you find the recipe that works best for you.

Obesity is a condition that carries wit it not only the stigma of being called names, but also the risk of getting serious illnesses like high blood pressure, heart ailment and diabetes. More and more people are turning to fad diets and other means to lower their weight but to no avail.

Fortunately for people whose obesity cannot be treated with dieting, there is such a non-traditional way to lose pounds and discourage binging and this is called gastric bypass surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery may seem complicated to the common man but it is just a method of decreasing a part of the stomach and then creating an outlet from the stomach to the intestine so that the person will feel full even after a few bites. This procedure, which requires the patient to have a stay in the hospital after surgery, can only be used as an option for a person who is morbidly obese or whose body weight is equal or more than twice his ideal body weight.

Within 24 hours after gastric bypass surgery, your doctors will allow you to check out of the hospital if you can already move comfortably and if you can bear some pain even without pain injections. .A person who has undergone gastric bypass surgery will be placed on a liquid diet but may be allowed to eat a few solids after a few weeks.

Words of caution though for those who have undergone this procedure; always listen to your stomach and not your urge because even an extra bite can cause discomfort and even vomiting. It may be hard to adjust to eating smaller portions but you will finally be able to adjust to three small meals a day later on. The technique is in chewing your food properly and enjoying every bite you take.

Drinking water before and during meal time is also discouraged as it can cause discomfort. However, consuming at least five glasses of liquid such as water and other non-caloric drink is advisable between meals.

Those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery should maintain a simple but regular exercise program like walking. Simple housekeeping chores can also be a form of exercise that is not too strenuous.

Generally, a person who has undergone gastric bypass surgery can lose as much as two thirds of his surplus weight during the first year. There are people who do not lose significant weight even after surgery because of the continued consumption of liquids with high caloric content and also due to improper diet.

A person who resorts to gastric bypass surgery should be willing to face the consequences as well as the conditions involved in such a procedure. It may be an effective way of getting rid of the excess pounds but you have to strictly follow the dietary rules or else, the surgery will be for nothing.

Cheap Viagra

Anyone who has used Viagra knows that the medication is expensive; however, for some men it is necessary in order for them to have a normal sexual relationship with their spouse or partner. Since most insurance companies do not cover this medication, cost becomes an issue of great concern. Sometimes it can be a difficult decision to make, especially when weighing the purchase of Viagra against being able to pay other bills, and for those on a fixed income, this can be difficult. After all, simply because one is retired does not mean they no longer want to have a sexual relationship. They have retired from work, not from life.

What is the answer to the dilemma? Where does one find cheap Viagra? The most obvious place is the Internet where Canadian pharmacies have been selling an abundant amount of medications at prices that are sometimes half of what pharmacies charge in the United States. Certainly, the United States government and the pharmaceutical companies are not happy with this and have attempted to block the sale of Canadian sales of drugs to the United States, but now, this has not succeeded. When ordering over the Internet, and even with cheap Viagra, keep in mind that the more you order at a time, the less it is going to cost you for the long term. For example, purchasing a quantity of ten is going to be more expensive per pill than purchasing a quantity of one hundred. Certainly, that sounds like a lot of pills for something that you only take when you want to have a sexual relations, but the overall savings per pill can be as much as two dollars. Since you are also going to pay shipping, it’s advisable to purchase as much as you can afford so that you don’t have to order as often.

For those who are hesitant about ordering Generic Viagra online, the same pharmacies that advertise on line usually have a phone number that you can use to call in your order. Of course, you can also fax it as well, especially when your first order is placed since they will more than likely need your doctor to fax the prescription. Again, to save yourself money on shipping, order as much as you can afford each time, even if it may be more than you think you’ll need for a month or even two.

If you really don’t want to order online or deal with the Canadian pharmacies, you will find someone wholesale drug manufacturers who will sell to the public, and the cheapest way is to purchase the generic instead of name brand. In many cases, the cost saves can be as much as 50-75% when purchasing the Rx generic brand. For those who are not ordinarily prone to purchase generic brands, they contain the same ingredients as name brand but are offered at a lower price. Though this is a product used for sexual function, the generic version will still do the same job as the name brand, so there is no need for you to pay the higher price for name brand.

Though Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a general problem, it is more common amongst women than men. This problem becomes serious because many women do not follow the commonest protocol to prevent or minimize the chances of UTI.

Preventive Measures

•Do not suppress the urge to urinate, as it may have dire consequences on your health leading to a fully-developed urinary tract infection.

•Always wipe yourself from front to back, this stops the entry of the bacteria from the anus into the vagina or urethra. After having a bath or a bowel movement, follow this simple rule.

•Take showers instead of bubble bath to prevent entrance of bacteria into the urethra which causes UTI.

•Wash your genital area before and after a sexual intercourse. Also urinate before and after an intercourse. This avoids the transference of bacteria from one partner to another.

•Douching and scented sprays can cause infection and irritation of the vaginal area. These do not help the cause of alleviating the Urinary Tract Infection problem.

•Drink good amount of cranberry juice as it one of the most simple and natural way of treating urinary tract infection. It prevents as well as heals the infection due to its medicinal properties.

•Stay away from caffeine found in coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, chocolates and many more.

•On the onset of urinary tract symptoms consume vitamin C supplements. It increases the acidity level of urine which helps to decrease the bacteria present in the urinary tract.

•You can apply a warm heating pad or hot water bottle on your abdomen to ease the pain.

•Use of spices like cinnamon and tincture mixture of herbs like buchu, uva ursi and juniper berries can act as antiseptics to clean kidney and bladder.

•Drink one glass of water for every 10 hours of the day. This will help you keep tab on the amount of water you drink.

•Avoid bladder irritants like citrus, tomatoes, aged cheese, chocolate, spicy food, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. The irritants may differ for some individuals, but these are some of the common ones.

Everyone has heard of skin peels and there are many – lactic, glycolic, salicylic, TCA (trichloroacetic acid), and phenol. Of these there are basically 3 levels:

Minor, superficial peels – lactic, glycolic, salicylic.
Medium depth peels – TCA, Jessner’s
Deep peels – phenol.

We will only deal with medium strength TCA peels here as they are the easiest to apply (Jessner’s can require multiple concurrent applications and taping to aide in skin penetration), safest, and, by far, the most effective against numerous skin ailments/conditions. They are also one of the most effective treatments for acne currently known to the medical community.

The most common treated area is the face. TCA is applied usually in a cream. Doctors will mix Obagi, Apeel, or other previously prepared cream with TCA and then apply this mixture to the face or body area to be treated. The creams tend to have a skin dye of green or blue so the doctor can easily see what areas have and or have not been treated. It is usually applied with a cotton or foam applicator. This is then left on for 10-20 minutes. Some doctors prefer to use a straight (non-cream) solution of TCA. This works much faster and penetrates deeper and is used for deeper peels.

After application and proper time for the desired depth is achieved, the doctor will apply a neutralizer. This is usually just a mixture of baking soda and water made into a paste. Some doctors will add chipped ice to further cool the skin. The skin will now be inflammed and if no dye was used will look like a bad sunburn. This will last 2-4 days until it starts to peel off and reveal new, clean, younger looking skin. Depending on the skin problems treated it may take several treatments, but a major difference will be seen immediately.

The results from a TCA peel are far more reaching than with a regular, superficial peel. Results can last 6 months to a year and it has been known to keep acne at bay, shrink and lessen acne scars, reduce and tighten up wrinkles, improve color, pigmentation, etc… A TCA peel cannot be applied as often as a more superficial peel. Generally speaking, a superficial peel can be applied every 2-5 weeks. A Stronger, medium depth peel needs more time batween peels for the skin to properly heal and regenerate. Doctors like to wait 2-6 months or more between these peels.

This process of chemically exfoliating the skin is more rapid and deeper in a TCA peel than in most peels. Many skin peels, like lactic, glycolic and salicylic are good at reducing oily buildup (overactive sebaceous glands), and very minor skin imperfections. but they cannot effectively treat acne, wrinkles, fine lines, etc… TCA has been proven to treat these deeper skin conditions and is offered at almost every dermatologist and plastic surgeon office. The improvement in skin color, tone, etc… is so drastic that women, even men are lining up in droves to have this done all over the world.
